Why Tribe.net will Never Become a Pay Site

by Fuckerpants Bogans

tribe will never become a pay site. why?

it has a 'first-mover' advantage that it doesn't want to lose. do you know how many tribe-like sites there are out there? you probably don't. you know why? because you're fairly satisfied with the two or three 'friendster-like' sites you already inhabit. you see, the Internet is one big amazon jungle. it's fierce and the competition is always looking to swallow the competitor.

right now there are at least two sites just like Tribe but that are better (better more innovative features) that are just drooling over the possibility that this site (or friendster or myspace or...) will become pay site.

because people that inhabit these sites are like rivers. they follow the path of least resistance. why pay for tribe when you can have it all for free somewhere else? and maybe even better. would you stay if all your friends left because it became a pay site?

probably not.

in order for Tribe to make this a pay site, it would have to offer a lot more than what it is now. what fuckerpants envisions is that it will eventually make some portions of it's features (as yet unveiled) pay-features but will not force anybody to pay for the current site as it is.

i'm thinkin maybe a personals section or a job search section or something like that. making the current site an entirely pay-only site, is ludacris and will kill it. the powers that be know this. or they should know it.

Tribe is launching ads and here's why...

Message hey fellow tribers,

Basically, we are looking for low impact ways to pay our light bills while still offering an innovative service to the community. We tried Google ads last summer and they worked ok but often had odd results. So, we are adding banners called “skyscrapers ”that will run on the right-side of certain pages. We think that the skyscraper positioning is a fairly low impact addition. This is experimental and a test so don ’t be surprised if you see changes regarding ads in the coming weeks. (Of course, if people would rather pay subscription fees, we could always keep the place ad free!)

We hope you will understand and respect our reasoning, support us (click an interesting ad now and then), and give us your feedback and ideas as always. Comments and discussion in tribeideas.tribe.net would be an excellent place to start.

And, as an added bonus we ’re offering the opportunity to get your own banner on Tribe free of charge (through end of January). We ’ll use some of our inventory specifically for our members ’banners; a great way to promote your favorite tribe, listing, profile, etc. To participate email Darian Patchin our director of marketing with your 120x600 banner (gif/jpeg, 15k), with your destination URL.

Thanks again for understanding our needs and supporting us as we grow.

Regards,

Mark Pincus
Founder and President

a few of these companies have actually been caught coding anti spyware software that when you run it uninstalls their competitors anti spyware software!!!

OK anyway, my point is plz plz invite ppl on other tribes you frequent, and send msgs to your friend you think might want in on these discussions..
If tribe got rid of the ads and became a pay site it would be really boring because most of the people here would probably leave. I know I would and most of my friends would too.
I'd much rather see ads than pay to use this site. It's really not that big of a deal.

they have one of the best advertising business models ive seen to date..

when you first log on you can earn a free day pass by watching a 20-45 sec add. This is one ad only, it may have animation, and sometimes even video or sound (there is always an option to watch a plain html version of the ad, and a button to turn sound off). Once you watch the one single add, you are given a cookie i believe which gives you 24hr access to all the content on salon.com. this leaves the rest of their site without animations, neon text, and other intrusive advertising. They have aditional advertising but its all small and not animated.

if tribe made me watch one 60 second commercial every two to three days for say 72 hours of access, id be more than willing to watch that one add..

but seeing animated icons and neon flashing text on every page of content that tribe has is just an eye sore..

THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY FOR TRIBE TO EARN MONEY THRU ADVERTISING WITHOUT THESE ADDS ON EVERY PAGE!!!

what are your thoughts about earning an access pass to tribe by watching one single add once in a while, thereby leaving content pages to content?

[also of note on salon.com, is that people who dont want to ever see an add have the option to donate an amount of money per year for full access with no ads anywhere. giving users the option to choose between advertising and paying a subscription, and allowing both types of users access to the same content is the right model... ]
